Learn to Swim

It is recommended that Pre K - Level 2 students just learning to swim take at least 2 weeks of lessons to secure their skills in order to advance to the next Level.  Children make the most progress by day 4 or 5 and we need more time to build on their foundation.

Preschool Classes - children ages 3 and 4 who are ready to be in the water without a parent and begin learning the fundamentals of swimming

  • Level 1 – at least 5 years of age, promotes comfort in the water, submerging, floating, breathe control and underwater swimming.
  • Level 2 – for those who have completed the skills in Level 1. Goals include swimming independently in the water at least 15 feet on front and back, comfort in deep water, exploration of treading.
  • Level 3 – for those who have completed the skills in Level 2. Goals include swimming front & back crawl at least 45 feet, rhythmic breathing and intro to diving.
  • Level 4 – for those who have completed the skills in Level 3. Goals include swimming front crawl, back crawl, elementary back stroke and intro to breaststroke, butterfly and sidestroke.
  • Level 5 – for those who have completed the skills in Level 4. Goals include swimming proficiently in all strokes, continue diving and a variety of water safety skills
  • Level 6 - Lifeguard Readiness, also known as Jr. Lifeguard.  Students will learn a variety of water rescue skills as well as have an introduction to using a backboard, students also are required to swim 500 yards using all strokes.

All classes follow the American Red Cross Learn to Swim guidelines; participants receive a certification card at the mastery of each level.
